Shipping vs. Local Pickup, Explained

Every listing needs a way to change hands
Winning a bid or clicking Buy It Now is only half the transaction — the item still has to get from the seller to the buyer. On The Porch Sale, sellers choose one of two ways for that to happen: ship it, or local pickup only.
Ship
The default for most listings. Your item is visible to buyers nationwide, and once it sells, you box it up and send it — same as any online marketplace.
Ship makes sense when:
- The item is small or sturdy enough to pack and mail reasonably
- You want the widest possible pool of buyers, not just people nearby
- Shipping cost is a small fraction of the item's value
Local pickup only
The buyer and seller meet up in person instead. No box, no carrier, no shipping cost or damage risk.
Local pickup makes sense when:
- The item is heavy, bulky, or fragile enough that shipping is expensive or risky (a couch, a stack of tires, a full box of glassware)
- It's high-value enough that you'd rather hand it off in person than trust it to a carrier (a car is the obvious case)
- It's not really a "shipping" situation at all — Services listings (appointments, time slots) are always local pickup only, since there's nothing to ship
Cars & Vehicles, Furniture, and Services are flagged as pickup-preferred categories — post a listing in one of those and "Local pickup only" is pre-selected for you. You can still switch it to Ship if your item genuinely travels well; the flag is a nudge, not a rule.
What The Porch Sale does and doesn't handle
The platform doesn't calculate or collect shipping fees, and it doesn't arrange pickup logistics for you. Your listing price is just the item's price — if shipping costs something, build that into your price or say so clearly in the description so there's no surprise after a sale. Once a sale happens, it's on the buyer and seller to work out the actual handoff, whether that's a shipping label or a time and place to meet.
The short version
- Small, sturdy, ships well? Ship it, reach every buyer.
- Heavy, bulky, high-value, or an in-person service? Local pickup only.
- Not sure? Ship is the default — switch to local pickup only if the math doesn't work out.
